Caernarfon 39 - Colwyn Bay 3

Caernarfon eventually took advantage of the opportunity to gain a bonus point victory over basement opponents Colwyn Bay but dispensing of them proved a far harder task than what many would have predicted.

A bright and purposeful opening brought reward for the Cofis, with full back Aled Jones accurate with the boot to nudge Caernarfon into a six point lead within the first seven minutes following a line out and tackle completion infringement. By continuing to apply pressure, Bay were hurried into attempted clearances, with one falling kindly into the awaiting hands of stand off Carwyn Roberts who found himself with a clear run from fifty meters to score the opening try after ten minutes. Jones was again accurate with the boot to draw the Cofis thirteen points clear.

Caernarfon looked to consolidate their position but a few stray passes were pounced upon by the opposition. One Oscar Astbury interception led to a seventy yard dash but Iolo Hughes got back just in time, however the Bay got some reward when Henry Morris was able to slot over the penalty awarded for illegal entry at the ensuing breakdown.

Flanker Harry Mostyn Jones was impressive for the Bay, covering every blade of grass at pace but did not always have the support needed. Meanwhile Caernarfon were using a few decent touch finders to camp in Colwyn Bay territory and when Elis Roberts made a half break, enough were at hand to present stand off Carwyn Roberts with the quick ball required to allow him enough space to squeeze over the line for his second try. Aled Jones once again added the extras.

The Bay to their credit kept fighting, with Number 8, Lloyd Jones impressive with ball in hand and competent when called upon to tackle. Likewise  prop Krystn Yeomans had a similar appetite for the challenge. However with halftime beckoning Elis Roberts's decision to wander into midfield paid dividends as his added presence caused enough confusion in defence to allow him the space to power towards the line and cross the whitewash triumphantly. Jones maintained his 100% record with the boot with another conversion.

Caernarfon started the second half brightly with the Bay doing well to hold the initial  onslaught but eventually the Cofis worked an overlap with good timing of the pass by Mike Downey releasing centre Dafydd Lloyd Williams who found a gap along the tramline to score the all important bonus point try out wide.

It was expected that Caernarfon would press ahead from this point but the second half was disappointing in that respect since it became a stalemate to all purposes . Oscar Astbury once again showed a desire to attack with venom but the Cofi try line was not breached. Caernarfon's Dominic Yau and Iolo Hughes worked well in partnership to relieve pressure but it was an Adam Thomas surge that brought Caernarfon into the danger zone and a quick feed allowed  Mike Downey to crash over with ten minutes to play. Aled Jones once again converted effectively from a difficult angle to close the scoring.

It would appear that Colwyn Bay's Division 1 status is about to be relinquished whilst the probable three horse race for the accompanying berth is still in the balance.
