Caernarfon 15 - Pwllheli 17

Caernarfon  15  Pwllheli  17

A  numerous, respectful and knowledgeable crowd witnessed a compelling Division 1 North encounter that kept everyone on tender hooks until the final whistle. Pwllheli were firmly in control at the midpoint but could be adjudged to be relieved to take the spoils at the death.

Proceedings began promisingly for Pwllheli when following three minutes of play a decisive break by stand off Daniel Williams found back row colleague Tom Parry at hand to stroll over. Williams also slotted the conversion to increase the value. The Cofis however made amends on their first foray into opposition territory when a holding on call saw Aled Jones successful from the tee to open their account.

From that point onwards however the visitors took the initiative, driving forcefully and displaying a  penchant for ball retention of the highest order with forwards quick to the breakdown and the backs swift and incisive with their charges. Second row Huw Williams was very impressive as a link and driving force during this period. The Cofis were stretched defensively but manfully succeeded to curtail Pwllheli to only one added score. It was fleet of foot Carwyn ap Myrddin who eventually succeeded to find a gap out wide and then outpaced the cover to scramble to the try line on twenty six minutes.

The half time chat would appear to have revitalised the Cofis, for with the slope they responded with an urgency not witnessed of late. A high tackle call pinned Pwllheli back in their own twenty two and from the ensuing line out, that for once succeeded for the Cofis, they grouped to form an effective driving maul that ended twenty meters later with flanker Shaun Owen grounding successfully.

Buoyant by the quick five pointer Caernarfon grew in stature with impressive gain line contributions from Mac Jones and Dafydd Lloyd Williams especially. A charge down nearly saw Williams capitalise but the final bounce favoured retrieving winger Robin Hughes Jones. Minutes later the Cofis crossed the white wash when winger Dylan Gwyn began and nearly finished an opportunistic effort only to be prevented from grounding. However from the ensuing scrum a Mac Jones charge followed by a smart inside switch saw Liam Leung collect and drive with purpose to cross on fifty minutes. Aled Jones improved the effort to grant the Cofis a three point cushion.

Pwllheli were however in general defensively sound and were quick to turn defence into attack. Good releasing out of the tackle led to a tramline break that ended with a forty meter dash for Gareth Williams to score and recapture the lead for Pwllheli with sixteen minutes of the half played.

Further scores would have been expected at this point with the Cofis, probably, on reflection ruing not accepting one kickable penalty whilst another accepted effort drifted wide of the upright. With the minutes ticking by a Carwyn Roberts break, taken on by Rhodri Jones nearly unlocked the scrambling Pwllheli defence but the reigning champions held on and composed themselves to contain play in the midfield area for the remaining few minutes.
